Counseling services are accessible to all northwestern college traditional undergraduate students, focus students, and pathways students. The services are not available to distance education students, unless that student is also taking traditional undergraduate classes or is a part of the focus program. The services are also not accessible to graduate students, alumni, or staff/faculty.
Counseling services are accessible to undergraduate and graduate students and consist of personal and group counseling and psychotherapy, marital and couples counseling, consultation and outreach services, and referral services for students. Consultation services are also obtainable to staff, faculty, and the university community on a variety of topics related to the emotional wellness of students. In keeping with accepted professional practice, counseling is severely secret, and no information is released without the student’s open written authorization.

In order to receive continuing services with the consulting psychiatrist, the student must commit to regular sessions with a counselor. The counselor’s primary focus is on personal counseling through a self-referral system. Both individual and group therapy are obtainable to students at their request. The counseling center integrates the philosophy of the honor principle by reinforcing the require for women to be assertive by being honest with themselves and every other. The counselor’s goal is to notify and empower students so that they can take charge of their own mental health and well-being.
